Aretha Louise Franklin naît le 25 mars 1942 à Memphis, Tennessee (Etats-Unis). Chanteuse de gospel, soul, funk, rythm and blues et de jazz, elle est surnommée « The Queen of Soul » ou encore « Lady Soul ». Au cours des années 80, la production la série Miami Vice utilisa un de ses titres, Who’s Zoomin’ Who, pour la bande-son de l’épisode L’échange.

Aretha Franklin commence sa carrière en 1956 en signant un contrat avec Columbia Records. Après quelques succès, elle signe un contrat avec Atlantic Records en 1967. C’est à partir de cette époque que sa carrière décolle véritablement. Les titres s’enchaînent, Respect (reprise d’Otis Redding), (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Think, et très vite elle acquiert son surnom de Queen of Soul. En 1968, Aretha Franklin est classée en seconde position des personnalités afro-américaines les plus connues au monde, juste derrière Martin Luther King.

En 1972, la sortie de son album live Amazing Grace créé l’évènement établissant cet opus comme l'un des albums gospel le plus vendu de tous les temps avec 2 millions de copies écoulées. Mais le succès rencontré jusque-là va s’étioler durant les années suivantes. L’album Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky) ne rencontrera pas le succès espéré malgré la collaboration de Quincy Jones. Ses albums suivants connaîtront le même sort. En 1976, elle s’essaie à la bande-son de film avec Sparkle, aux côtés de Curtis Mayfield. Un des titres de l’album se classera en tête des charts R’n’B de l’époque. Trois nouveaux albums seront publiés chez Atlantic Records, mais ceux-ci ne rencontreront pas le succès. 1979 signera le départ d’Aretha Franklin de la maison de disque qui aura fait d’elle une star.

En 1980, elle signe chez Arista Records, et chante au Royal Albert Hall devant la reine Elizabeth II. Pour la première fois de sa carrière, elle apparaît dans un film, The Blues Brothers. Le premier album qu’elle sortira chez Arista, en 1980, s’intitule sobrement Aretha. L’année suivante, elle sort Love All the Hurt Away, mais c’est 1982, qu’elle renouera avec le succès, avec l’album Jump to it. Pour la première fois depuis 7 ans, elle verra un de ses albums être certifié Disque d’Or. Le titre éponyme, sera son premier single depuis 6 ans à entrer dans le top 40. En 1985, son album Who’s Zoomin Who devient son premier album à être Disque de platine. La production de Miami Vice utilisera le titre éponyme, pour l’épisode de la saison 2, L’échange. En 1987, après plusieurs albums au succès équivalent, elle enregistre son 3e album de gospel.

En 1991, son nouvel album What You See is What You Sweat, fait un véritable flop. Elle retrouvera le succès en 1993 avec la chanson dance A Deeper Love. Elle multiplie les intervention sur les bande-son de film, notamment Sister Act. En 1998, elle renoue une nouvelle fois avec le succès grâce au titre A Rose Is Still a Rose, une collaboration avec Lauryn Hill.

En 2004, Aretha Franklin annonce qu’elle quitte le label Arista avec qui elle travaillait depuis plus de 20 ans. Malgré cela, afin d’assumer les termes de son contrat avec Arista, un nouvel album de duo sortira en 2007. L’année suivante, elle sort un album de Noël, This Christmas, Aretha, chez DMI Records. En janvier 2009, elle chante lors de la cérémonie d’intronisation de Barrack Obama à la Maison Blanche.

En 2011, sous son propre label, Aretha’s Records, elle sort un nouvel album intitulé Aretha : A Woman Falling Out Of Love. Malgré l’existence de son label, elle signe en 2013 avec RCA Records, et se lance dans la préparation d’un nouvel album, en collaboration avec Babyface et Danger Mouse.

Le 16 aout 2018, Aretha Franklin décède à Détroit (Michigan) des suites d'un cancer du pancréas.

Aretha Franklin a vendu plus de 75 millions de disques et reste l'artiste féminine ayant vendu le plus de disques vinyles de tous les temps. Le magazine Rolling Stone la place, d’ailleurs, première au classement des meilleurs chanteurs de tous les temps.
